Empathy is a bit like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. But more than that, to exercise empathy, you have to imagine the feelings, and circumstances, of people who are very different from you. Learning about different peoples' lives, be that through art, films, or face-to-face conversations, equips you to imagine how they might feel, and how your actions might affect them. This is the sense in which we all need to exercise our empathy.
